Welcome to Year 3,
Welcome to Year 3’s class page. In Year 3 we aim to spend our days wearing a smile as we believe that happiness is key to successful learning. We always try our best and bring to school our ‘can do’ attitudes which help us when we face challenges which we we initially feel are tough. During our lessons we try to have fun and this year we are taking our learning outside to make it more, regardless of the weather.
In Year 3 we are just about to begin a new adventure exploring our new topic “Who first lived in Britain,” during this time we will be learning about the Stone Age though to the Iron age. We will be linking our English lessons to our topic and studying 3 different novels, Stig of the Dump, Stone age boy and UG.
We will continue to bring home spellings each week on a Friday. We will work on learning the spellings in school during the week and the spellings will be tested usually the following Friday. Extra support learning at home would be appreciated.
Our RE topic is Sikhism and we will be studying the main beliefs that Sikhs share as well as a possible visit to a Gurdwara.
Also, as last term we will be working closely with our Eco- Council working on our Outdoor Areas, with the aim of children learning how to sow seeds, nurture the plants and harvesting the produce. We will grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, which the children will take ownership of and during their Eco-Sessions they will work on a variety of projects around our school grounds. Some of the produce that we grow may be used by our school kitchen – this is a very exciting part of gardening that engages children in healthy eating and opens them up to trying new things that they wouldn’t necessarily have or try at home.
Key areas of study this half term: Children will build on their mathematical skills moving from practical calculations to more written methods. We will also begin to learn the 8 times tables and division facts associated with them. We will be focusing on TT rock stars as part of our tables work, as well as learning about different units of measure and fractions.
Children will read a variety of texts and develop their own writing skills using the texts, whilst improving their comprehension skills.
During our topic for this term we will be studying, the terms AD/BC and we will place events on a timeline; knowing when events from the past happened. We will look at how art influenced the Stone Age, whilst creating our own cave paintings.
Children will take part in guided reading during the school week with the teacher.
Staff will try and read as often as possible with your child. Please send your child’s reading book into school every day to enable this to happen.
