Welcome to Year 5.

A warm welcome to Year 5 and Upper Key Stage Two! Although life in the Upper Juniors can be challenging at times, we always try to approach our learning with a smile and an open mindset. Mrs Furnell and Mrs Brocklehurst share the teaching in Year 5 and you may also see Mrs Nicholson, our Teaching Assistant and Mrs Brandwood, who assists with reading groups.

Key Areas of Study for the Spring term:

This term we are doing lots of converting between units and continuing to develop our skills in number work in Maths. We are completing regular spelling, grammar and reading comprehension work and have switched to SpaG mats to develop our English. Please ask the children what this acronym stands for! We are going off into outer space for our Science topic: Earth, Space and Forces. In R.E. we are looking at another world religion: Islam. In MFL, we are continuing to learn to give and ask for more personal information, so that we can try to converse with any Spanish speakers we might meet.

Home learning

We will have daily Maths work to practice at home each night in our Maths home school book.

We are continuing to read in groups once a week and have tasks set for us to practice the skills we have learned in class. Please look out for our small blue books with these questions and tasks in.

We always have spellings and ‘SpaG’ mats on a Monday and maths sheets on a Thursday. Although we have some time for the children to practise their skills in school, it is great when they also practise these at home. The children were really keen to try out the TT Rock Stars activities and we are also extremely pleased when children do these activities at home, too.

Key Dates for Year 5:

Thursdays are our swimming days, so trunks, costumes, towels, swimming hats (for long hair) are needed each week. It is also helpful if children with pierced ears leave their earrings at home or have a container to put them in.
