Mrs D Furnell
Mrs E Nicholson
Welcome to Year 5.
A warm welcome to Year 5 and Upper Key Stage Two! Although life in the Upper Juniors can be challenging at times, we always try to approach our learning with a smile and an open mindset. Mrs Furnell is the teacher in Year 5 along with Mrs Nicholson, our Teaching Assistant and Mrs Brandwood, who assists with reading groups.
Key Areas of Study for the Summer term:
Maths – fractions, decimals, time, reflection, translation, statistics
English – Persuasive writing, reading work (especially ‘inference’ type questions) on ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The children will also have inference type tasks linked to their home reading each week.
Topic – finishing our Brazil topic with consideration of the deforestation of the rainforests, then beginning a new World War 2 topic
As you will see from the rearranged timetable, we have switched from Swimming and Orienteering to school based PE on Wednesdays and are excited about going bowling on Fridays.
Homework (spellings, grammar work and maths work) will continue to be given on Fridays.
We will have daily Maths work to practice at home each night in our Maths home school book.
We are continuing to read in groups once a week and have tasks set for us to practice the skills we have learned in class. Please look out for our small blue books with these questions and tasks in.
We always have spellings and ‘SpaG’ mats on a Monday and maths sheets on a Thursday. Although we have some time for the children to practise their skills in school, it is great when they also practise these at home. The children were really keen to try out the TT Rock Stars activities and we are also extremely pleased when children do these activities at home, too.
