Careers

Thinking about our futures...

We have made deliberate, age-appropriate decisions regarding covering future employability at Turton and Edgworth. We understand how important it is to help children think about their futures and to be aware that there should be equality and that opportunities are open to all, regardless of our individualities.

For example, in Reception, we share pictures of people who help us, such as police officers, teachers, doctors, etc. These pictures show male and female adults, of differing ages, skin colour, sizes and ethnicities, etc., doing their roles.

In Summer, we have a Careers Week in school in which we invite a wide variety of professions into school to talk about their jobs and how they got into them. Again, we promote equality and protected characteristics. Last year, for example, we had 3 female engineers share their roles. We were taught how this industry is currently working hard to encourage more girls to select this as a career choice.

Curriculum: Years 1-6 have a specific unit in their PSHE curriculum called, "Economic Wellbeing" (see 'curriculum' tab for more information). In this unit, careers are discussed and, again at an age appropriate level, ideas of pathways into those potential careers.
