Our children learn about music and experience music in many areas of school life. Music classroom lessons are taught through music skills using our 'Sing-Up' curriculum. The children learn about performing music, listening to music and gaining knowledge and understanding of music.
At Turton and Edgworth, we aim to provide a music curriculum which will inspire creativity, self-expression and encourage our children to become confident, reflective musicians. Children are exposed to diverse musical experiences and music is woven throughout other curriculum areas. Children are encouraged to find their voices as singers, to compose their own pieces and to develop skills in performance. We provide children with the opportunity to perform in front of an audience both within and outside of school. We aim to promote an appreciation of music and develop children as singers and musicians to allow them to experience ‘life in all its fullness’.
Music is an integral part of worship and class assemblies. There are regular opportunities throughout the year for classes to perform music to the whole school, to parents and the local community through our links with the Anglican and Methodist churches. We welcome a wide range of visitors to school who have performed music and led workshops in different genres. Recently we have enjoyed workshops with medieval musicians and 'The Sixteen' (a world renonwened singing ensemble). We also take part in a project with the Englsih National opera.
A love of music and singing is encouraged in the EYFS and songs and music are used throughout school in a variety of lessons from maths to history to bring learning to life.
All our children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 are given the opportunity to learn to play the classical guitar, flute, clarinet or brass instrument from a professional tutor from Bolton Music Service. Mr. Higginson teaches guitar, Mrs. Kay teaches woodwind and Mr. Hobson, teaches brass. If you would like more information about music lessons please ask the school office.
